Question

A project is about to start with a global project team. Travel is not a viable option for project team members, so most will participate virtually. What should the project manager do to engage the team?

Options

  • AInvest in a virtual collaboration/colocation environment.
  • BHave one-on-one meetings with team members to improve communication.
  • CAsk human resources (HR) for team-building recommendations.
  • DSchedule weekly team meetings to encourage collaboration.

  • B

  • C
    17% (5)
  • D
    3% (1)

Why each option

To effectively engage a global, virtual project team, the project manager should invest in a robust virtual collaboration environment that fosters shared space and seamless interaction.

AInvest in a virtual collaboration/colocation environment.Correct

A virtual collaboration/colocation environment provides a shared digital workspace that simulates physical proximity, offering tools for continuous communication, shared document access, and integrated task management crucial for effective teamwork in a geographically dispersed setting. This comprehensive solution directly addresses the challenge of engaging a virtual team by providing the necessary infrastructure for sustained interaction and shared work, fostering a sense of community and efficiency.

BHave one-on-one meetings with team members to improve communication.

While one-on-one meetings are beneficial for individual communication, they do not address the broader requirement for team-wide engagement and continuous collaboration across a globally distributed team.

CAsk human resources (HR) for team-building recommendations.

HR recommendations might offer general team-building ideas, but they do not directly provide the practical tools and environment necessary for daily operational collaboration in a virtual context.

DSchedule weekly team meetings to encourage collaboration.

Weekly team meetings are a good communication tool, but on their own, they are insufficient to build continuous engagement, facilitate real-time problem-solving, and foster a sense of shared purpose for an entirely virtual and global team.

A is the right call here. I run distributed teams across three time zones and a solid virtual colocation setup is non-negotiable, it gives everyone a shared workspace and presence that one-on-ones or weekly meetings just cannot replicate.

A is correct. PMI wants you to invest in the tooling, not just schedule more meetings.

Got A on my exam last month, virtual colocation is the PMBOK buzzword here.

Agreed on A, though in practice virtual colocation only works if the team actually commits to using the tools as a shared workspace rather than just turning cameras on for standups.

A is the right call here, and I know because I overthought this exact scenario on my first attempt and picked B. The PMBOK specifically calls out virtual colocation as the tool for engaging distributed global teams, so invest in that collaboration environment.

I first leaned toward D since regular meetings seem like the obvious engagement lever, but the stem emphasizes a global team where travel isnt viable, which points you toward investing in a virtual colocation environment as the structural fix rather than just scheduling another ceremony. A is the PMI answer here.
