2V0-620 · Question #85
Which two statements are true about VMFS5 datastores on ESXi 6.x? (Choose two.)
The correct answer is A. Virtual Disk (VMDK) size can be larger than 2TB. B. Datastore extent size can be larger than 2TB. VMFS5 on ESXi 6.x lifted the 2TB barrier for both VMDKs and datastore extents, using a fixed 1MB block size regardless of file size.
Question
Which two statements are true about VMFS5 datastores on ESXi 6.x? (Choose two.)
Options
- AVirtual Disk (VMDK) size can be larger than 2TB.
- BDatastore extent size can be larger than 2TB.
- COnly Physical Mode Raw Device Map (Passthrough-RDM) can be larger than 2TB.
- D2MB block size is required to support larger than 2TB file size.

Why each option
VMFS5 on ESXi 6.x lifted the 2TB barrier for both VMDKs and datastore extents, using a fixed 1MB block size regardless of file size.
VMFS5 introduced support for VMDKs larger than 2TB (up to 62TB), removing the previous VMFS3 limitation that capped virtual disk size at 2TB minus 512 bytes.
VMFS5 datastore extents can also exceed 2TB, supporting large LUNs directly without the old 2TB-per-extent ceiling that existed in VMFS3.
Both VMDKs and Virtual-Mode RDMs (not just Physical-Mode/Passthrough RDMs) can exceed 2TB on VMFS5, so restricting the claim to Passthrough-RDM only is incorrect.
VMFS5 uses a uniform 1MB block size for all datastores regardless of file size - there is no 2MB block size option or requirement to support large files.
