Why each option
On laptops, the numeric keypad is overlaid on letter keys and activated by Num Lock; toggling the Function and Num Lock key combination disables this overlay and restores normal letter input.
Switching fonts changes the visual rendering of characters on screen but has no effect on which characters are generated by keystrokes.
Regional settings control language, locale, and keyboard layout language mapping, but they do not control the numeric overlay triggered by Num Lock.
Laptop keyboards share physical keys between alphabetic characters and a numeric keypad overlay. When Num Lock is engaged, pressing keys on the right side of the keyboard outputs numbers and symbols instead of letters. Pressing the Fn + Num Lock key combination toggles Num Lock off, immediately restoring the keys to their letter functions.
Connecting an external keyboard is a workaround that avoids the problem rather than resolving the Num Lock configuration issue on the laptop.
