Why is configuring CIFS on a NAS the best design solution for vDisk storage?

While potentially less expensive than a SAN, a NAS with CIFS may not be the absolute least expensive storage solution available.

CIFS on a single NAS typically offers moderate scalability and resilience; however, highly scalable and resilient solutions usually involve clustered file systems or a SAN.

CIFS, now commonly known as SMB, is a widely adopted file-sharing protocol that leverages existing network infrastructure and familiar file share concepts, making it generally simpler to configure and manage compared to block-level storage protocols like iSCSI or Fibre Channel. This ease of integration and management reduces the need for specialized storage expertise, thus lowering administrative burden.

While a NAS itself contributes to reducing the system footprint by consolidating storage, the choice of CIFS over iSCSI on the same NAS device does not inherently further reduce the physical footprint.
