Reversing the image in PVS is the process of booting a target device from its local hard disk rather than from the streamed vDisk, which makes the local disk writable so updated XenServer tools can be installed. After the tools are installed, the administrator re-captures the updated OS back to the vDisk using the imaging wizard. This is the supported workflow for modifying a vDisk that is deployed in Standard (shared read-only) mode.

Cloning the master target device creates a copy of the device, not a writable version of the shared vDisk, so tool updates would not be captured back into the streamed image.

Private image mode makes the vDisk accessible to only one device at a time but does not represent the proper PVS workflow for updating a Standard mode shared image, and switching access modes on a live shared vDisk risks data inconsistency.

Maintenance mode on a Delivery Group is a XenDesktop/CVAD concept that controls session brokering and has no effect on vDisk content stored in Provisioning Services.
