All the laptops run Windows XP Professional. These laptops will be connected to the company's network through wireless connections. The company's management wants to implement Shared Key authentication for these laptops. Why each option
Shared Key authentication is a WEP-specific authentication mode; the option only appears in Windows XP wireless configuration after WEP encryption is enabled on the adapter.
PEAP-MS-CHAP v2 is an 802.1X-based EAP authentication method used with RADIUS servers and is unrelated to WEP Shared Key authentication.
Windows XP Service Pack 1 added WPA support to the wireless client, but Shared Key authentication is a WEP feature already present in the base OS - SP1 does not unlock it.
Shared Key authentication is exclusively a feature of WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) and is not visible in the Windows XP wireless NIC configuration until WEP is selected as the encryption type. Once WEP is enabled on the adapter, the authentication mode dropdown presents both Open System and Shared Key options. Without WEP enabled, the Shared Key option is simply hidden from the interface.
EAP-TLS is a certificate-based 802.1X authentication protocol and is entirely separate from the WEP Shared Key mechanism.
