While IP and MPLS use variable-length packets, ATM itself uses fixed-length cells, and the primary benefit of the ATM backbone is not its ability to handle variable-length packets, which are segmented before transmission.

ATM's ability to support isochronous traffic is a characteristic, but not the primary benefit for IP/MPLS in general, which isn't inherently isochronous.
