2V0-621 · Question #57
An administrator is configuring virtual machines to use Worldwide Port Names (WWPNs) to access the storage Which two conditions are required? (Choose two.)
The correct answer is A. The switches in the fabric must be N-Port ID Virtualization aware. B. The virtual machines must be using passthrough Raw Disk Mapping (RDMp). Using WWPNs with virtual machines for direct storage access requires both NPIV-aware fabric switches and passthrough RDM disk mappings.

Why each option
Using WWPNs with virtual machines for direct storage access requires both NPIV-aware fabric switches and passthrough RDM disk mappings.
N-Port ID Virtualization (NPIV) allows a single physical Fibre Channel HBA to register multiple virtual WWPNs with the fabric on behalf of VMs. Fabric switches must support NPIV to accept and route these virtual N-Port logins; without it, the VM's WWPN cannot be recognized in the SAN fabric.
Passthrough RDM (RDMp) bypasses ESXi's storage virtualization layer and presents the raw LUN directly to the VM, which is the only disk format that allows the VM's assigned WWPN to communicate directly with the storage array using its own fabric identity.
VMDKs are managed by the ESXi host storage stack and abstract the underlying hardware, so they cannot expose a per-VM WWPN to the Fibre Channel fabric - NPIV-based storage access is incompatible with the VMDK format.
Storage I/O Control is a quality-of-service feature that throttles datastore I/O bandwidth among competing VMs and has no role in WWPN assignment or Fibre Channel fabric registration.
