Why each option
After updating a vDisk image with a new application, target devices must be restarted to boot from the updated vDisk and see the newly installed software.
Promoting a vDisk changes its version status in the vDisk versioning chain, but does not by itself refresh what running target devices are streaming.
In Citrix Provisioning Services, target devices stream their OS from a vDisk at boot time. When the vDisk is updated with a new application, devices already running continue to use their currently streamed image. Restarting the target devices forces them to re-stream from the updated vDisk, making the new application available to users.
Changing the vDisk to Private mode restricts it to a single device for maintenance purposes and would break multi-user access rather than fix visibility.
The target device type classification (Production, Test, Maintenance) controls which vDisk version the device receives, but changing it does not force a refresh of a running device's streamed image.
