When setting up a single appliance, the LAN interface is what gets assigned the IP, so you either keep that cable disconnected from your existing network during initial config or verify beforehand that the address you're assigning isn't already taken, which is the only way to actually prevent a conflict at the source.

The "single appliance" framing probably just grounds the scenario so you are not worrying about inter-node fabric IPs or cluster VIPs, but the LAN conflict check itself is the same step regardless of deployment size.

Okay I'll be honest, I got suckered by D because iSCSI sounds so techy and official that my brain went "ooh that must be the trap answer they want," but then I pictured my mnemonic LAN = Local Address Needs checking, and boom, C locked in because the whole conflict problem lives right there on the LAN where your IP has to be unique, not on the storage cable.

The mnemonic is clever but iSCSI actually runs over IP too, so the real trap is that D doesn't tell you WHERE the duplicate is, just how the drive connects.

C is right. The LAN interface is what you assign the management IP to during single-appliance setup, so if that cable is already plugged into a live network with a conflicting address you will get a collision before you even finish the wizard.

Carlos has it right, and worth adding that the wizard will sometimes silently accept the conflicting IP and only surface the problem later when you try to reach the management console, so doing a quick ping sweep of that subnet before you start saves a headache.
