Why each option
Server Classes in the forwarder management interface and serverclass.conf define which apps are deployed to which groups of forwarder clients.
clientapps.conf is not a valid Splunk configuration file, and there is no 'Apps tab' in the forwarder management interface that maps apps to clients.
deploymentclient.conf resides on the forwarder itself and points it to a deployment server; it does not define which apps are assigned to which clients.
serverclass.conf defines server class stanzas that use filters (hostname, IP, machine type) to map specific apps to specific client groups; the Server Classes tab in the forwarder management UI provides a graphical interface for creating and managing these same mappings.
Neither a 'Client Applications tab' nor clientapps.conf exists within Splunk's deployment server architecture.
