Wireless AP connectivity is explicitly recognized in ANSI/TIA-568.1 as a valid method for providing a telecommunications outlet in a work area, representing a wireless TO/C.

Balanced twisted-pair outlets using 8-position modular jacks (8P8C) are the most widely deployed and fully approved telecommunications outlet/connector type in the standard.

Optical fiber connectors are fully approved as telecommunications outlet/connector types in ANSI/TIA-568 for fiber-to-the-desk and other fiber work area applications.

ANSI/TIA-568 defines acceptable telecommunications outlet/connector types and does not include the 4p4c (RJ9/RJ10) connector, which is a 4-position, 4-contact modular connector intended only for telephone handset cords. This connector does not meet the physical or performance requirements for a permanent work area telecommunications outlet. Valid outlet types under the standard include 8-position modular jacks, optical fiber connectors, and wireless AP-based outlets.
