PCCET · Question #111
Ten containers running on five virtual machines are spread between two type 2 hypervisors. How many OS instances are you running?
The correct answer is C. 7. The total number of OS instances includes the host operating systems for each Type 2 hypervisor plus the guest operating systems running within each virtual machine.

Why each option
The total number of OS instances includes the host operating systems for each Type 2 hypervisor plus the guest operating systems running within each virtual machine.
This only counts the host OSes for the hypervisors and ignores the guest OSes within the VMs.
This only counts the guest OSes for the VMs and ignores the host OSes for the hypervisors.
There are two Type 2 hypervisors, each requiring its own host operating system, accounting for two OS instances. Additionally, there are five virtual machines, each running its own guest operating system, contributing five more OS instances. Containers share the kernel of their host OS (in this case, the VM's guest OS) and do not represent separate OS instances. Therefore, 2 (host OSes) + 5 (guest OSes) = 7 OS instances.
This incorrectly adds the number of containers as separate OS instances; containers share the kernel of the VM's guest OS.
