RIP (Routing Information Protocol) is an open standard defined in RFC 1058 (RIPv1) and RFC 2453 (RIPv2) and is supported by all major vendors.
EIGRP was developed by Cisco and, although a limited informational RFC was later published, it remains fundamentally a Cisco proprietary protocol requiring Cisco equipment. It uses the Diffusing Update Algorithm (DUAL) and combines features of both distance-vector and link-state protocols. Non-Cisco routers cannot natively participate in EIGRP routing without Cisco licensing.
