Zoning is a Fibre Channel switch-level configuration that defines groups of devices - identified by their WWNNs or WWPNs - that are permitted to see and communicate with each other on the SAN fabric. Adding a new server's WWNN to a zone is the required step to allow that server to discover its allocated storage targets on the array. Without proper zone membership, the server's HBA will not receive LUN advertisement from the storage array even if physical connectivity exists.

LUN masking is a storage array-level configuration that restricts which host WWNs can access specific LUNs, and is not the configuration performed on the FC switch using WWNN membership.
