Question
A cloud engineer is provisioning a group of servers in a public cloud using a template. The template uses a custom image that includes all the hardening minimum security standards approved by the cybersecurity department. The image is more than 30 days old and is updated on a quarterly basis. Before deploying the servers in production, the cloud engineer should:
Options
- Aensure the servers are fully patched.
- Benable all unneeded ports.
- Cenable NAT to the servers.
- Dapply server patches to the template.

Why each option
Before deploying servers from an older custom image to production, it is critical to ensure they are fully updated with the latest security patches.
Even if a custom image includes initial hardening, an image older than 30 days will inevitably have missed security updates released in the interim. Therefore, before deploying to production, the newly provisioned servers must be fully patched to address any vulnerabilities discovered since the image was created, maintaining the approved security standards.
Enabling all unneeded ports would increase the attack surface and violate security best practices, directly contradicting the goal of maintaining security standards.
Enabling Network Address Translation (NAT) to the servers is a networking configuration that may or may not be required for the application and is not directly related to ensuring the security posture of the server itself after provisioning from an older image.
While applying server patches to the template would be beneficial for future deployments, the immediate concern for current servers being deployed from an existing outdated image is to patch those specific instances before they go into production.
