Make sure that the Volume Shadow Copy Service is running and set on Automatic. 3. If the Status of System Restore Service is not Started, Start it. Also set it on Automatic if it is 4. Restart your computer. We could also arrive at this solution by a process of elimination. We don't need to start Instance1 - it is already running. If it weren't, we'd get a different message ("AD service must be running inorder to perform this operation") We wouldn't disable the service for Instance1, as it is needed to access the instance so we can take a snapshot. Setting the Startup Type for the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) to Manual would prevent it from running on-demand when the snapshot operation is requested. This would prevent us from taking the snapshot! So the only option left is to start VSS (meaning whatever is supposed to automatically trigger it,
