A single AP can only estimate the radial distance from itself, producing a circle of possible positions - a unique 2D map coordinate cannot be determined from one reference point alone.

Trilateration using RSSI requires at least 3 access points because each AP provides one distance estimate based on signal strength, and three circles (one per AP) are the geometric minimum needed to intersect at a single unique point on a 2D floor map. The Cisco MSE uses this minimum of 3 AP measurements to compute and plot a client's location.

Four APs improve location accuracy and reduce error but are not the minimum required - basic triangulation is geometrically achievable with 3 APs.

Six APs provide high-density coverage for enhanced precision in demanding environments but greatly exceed the minimum of 3 needed for a baseline location calculation.
