2V0-622 · Question #293
Which three requirements are needed to apply RAID 5 or RAID 6 erasure coding on a vSAN 6.2 or 6.5 object? (Choose three.)
The correct answer is A. on Disk Format 3.0 C. All Flash vSAN D. vSAN Advanced License. RAID 5 and RAID 6 erasure coding in vSAN 6.2 and 6.5 requires all three of: on-disk format 3.0, an All Flash configuration, and the vSAN Advanced license.

Why each option
RAID 5 and RAID 6 erasure coding in vSAN 6.2 and 6.5 requires all three of: on-disk format 3.0, an All Flash configuration, and the vSAN Advanced license.
On-disk format 3.0 introduced the internal structure required to store erasure-coded stripe metadata; objects on earlier formats cannot be protected with RAID 5 or RAID 6 policies.
Hybrid vSAN configurations - those using a mix of SSDs and HDDs - explicitly do not support RAID 5 or RAID 6 erasure coding and must use RAID 1 mirroring instead.
Erasure coding is only supported on All Flash vSAN because the high write amplification generated by parity calculations is not tolerable on hybrid (spinning disk) cache tiers.
The vSAN Advanced license is the minimum licensing tier that unlocks erasure coding; the Standard license restricts protection policies to RAID 1 mirroring only.
Stretched cluster deployments are incompatible with RAID 5 and RAID 6 policies; VMware does not support erasure coding in stretched or two-site vSAN topologies.
