Why each option
When using Cable Select mode on a PATA channel, all devices on that cable must be set to Cable Select - mixing with Master or Slave jumper settings causes conflicts.
Setting the HDD to Cable Select while the optical drive is Master still mixes jumper modes, which will produce the same conflict as the original configuration.
Cable Select allows the IDE cable's 28th wire (the CS wire) to determine device priority by position on the cable. For this to work correctly, every device connected to the same IDE channel must have its jumper set to Cable Select - if any device is set to Master or Slave while another is set to Cable Select, the mixed configuration causes unpredictable boot behavior.
Setting both devices to Slave with no Master device on the channel results in an invalid configuration - each IDE channel requires exactly one Master device.
Setting both devices to Master on the same IDE channel creates a conflict because two devices cannot simultaneously assert Master status on the same ATA bus.
