In SAN zoning, a device such as an HBA or storage port can be assigned to multiple zones at the same time. This is a fundamental design feature that allows a host to access multiple storage arrays or allows a storage port to be shared across different host zones without restriction on zone membership count.
Zones have no size requirement and can contain any number of members regardless of other zones.
Zone membership can be configured by pWWN (port World Wide Name), nWWN (node World Wide Name), or by physical FC switch port, not exclusively by pWWN.
Hard zoning is enforced at the ASIC/hardware level in the switch and cannot be disabled; only soft zoning (name server-based) is software-controlled.
