For which reason would you implement a VSAN?

Zoning is a mechanism that functions within a VSAN to control device-to-device access; VSANs do not overcome zoning limitations but instead provide a higher-level segmentation layer above zoning.

Virtualizing storage capacity is handled by storage virtualization appliances or array-based solutions, not VSANs, which virtualize the fabric network rather than the storage resources themselves.

A VSAN creates a logical partition within a physical fabric so that each VSAN operates as an independent fabric with its own services, including nameserver, zoning, and RSCN domains. This segmentation allows organizations to isolate different traffic types, tenants, or applications on the same physical hardware, which is the primary and defining purpose of VSAN technology on Cisco MDS switches.

LUN masking is an access control feature implemented at the storage array or host bus adapter level; VSANs operate at the fabric layer and do not interact with or overcome LUN masking limitations.
