A is correct. ClusterXL members must run the same OS, the same Check Point version, and the same policy, but the appliance model does not have to match, so you can mix hardware as long as those three stay identical.

Saw this one word for word on mine, and I almost went with B because I figured the appliance model had to match, but the sync traffic and policy negotiation just need the OS version and Check Point version to line up, not identical hardware. The policy requirement caught me off guard at first but it makes sense when you think about it, the whole cluster has to enforce the same ruleset or you get asymmetric traffic decisions.

The senior I work under drilled this into me when we set up a small cluster in the lab: the members have to run the same OS and the same Check Point version because the sync daemon has to speak the same language across all nodes, otherwise state tables just fall apart. The policy piece makes sense too since the Security Management Server pushes one unified policy to the whole cluster object, so every member ends up with identical rulesets by design. What tripped me up at first was option 3, same appliance model, because I assumed you could only cluster identical hardware, but that is actually not a hard requirement, you can mix models as long as the software side lines up. So the answer the key gives, A, points you toward OS, version, and policy being the three that matter. Here is what I am still fuzzy on though: if the cluster members do not have to be the same model, does that mean they can also have different amounts of RAM or interface counts, and if so, how does Check Point handle a failover where the standby member has fewer interfaces than the active one? Does it just drop traffic on those extra interfaces or does the admin have to manually account for that in the topology?

Took this one on my second attempt after bombing the cluster section the first time around. What tripped me up was option 3, same appliance model, because it sounds reasonable until you remember that Check Point explicitly supports mixed hardware in a cluster as long as the OS, software version, and policy all match, which is the actual glue that keeps cluster sync from falling apart.

D, same version, same hardware, same policy, that binds your cluster.

Sara, the correct answer is A. Even with identical versions, hardware, and policy, different cluster sizes produce different default partition counts and replication factors, so the configs are not equivalent across clusters.
