The PCI Hot Plug Manager requires the target adapter to be in a Defined (unconfigured) state before it can safely be removed or replaced. Unconfiguring the adapter and its child devices releases all kernel and driver references, preventing I/O errors or system faults during physical removal. Attempting to remove a configured device without this step can cause data corruption or a system crash.

A spare adapter slot is not required to remove a failed adapter; the task only requires that the existing slot and its devices be properly unconfigured.

Providing additional SAN cabling relates to restoring redundancy after the replacement is complete, not to the prerequisite steps required before initiating the Remove task.
